What governors can see in Student Radar

Written for: School governors.

As a governor, you see Student Radar at whole-school level. You read the reports your school shares with the governing board, such as the headteacher’s report and the annual safeguarding audit. You don’t see individual pupils: no names, profiles or pupil records. This article explains what you can open and what to expect from the rest of the menu.

Student Radar opens on the Heat Map. The Heat Map is built from individual pupils’ records, so it isn’t available to governors. You’ll usually see “Your role does not have access to this view.” That’s expected. Use the sidebar on the left to open the pages below.

If you have access to more than one school, choose the school first. See Switch between schools.

These are the defaults for governors. Your school can give you more or less access.

Page Where to find it What it shows
Headteacher’s Report Leadership → Strategy & assurance → Headteacher’s Report The headteacher’s reports that have been issued to you. See Read the headteacher’s report.
Safeguarding Audit Safeguard → Oversight & Assurance → Safeguarding Audit The school’s annual safeguarding self-audit, once it’s been sent to governors. Schools in England only. See Review the safeguarding audit summary.
Provision Settings Inclusion → SEND → Provision → Provision Settings The school’s default costs and review periods for SEND provision, read-only. See Set default provision costs and review periods.

To open a page, click the menu heading in the sidebar, then the group, then the page.

Student Radar treats governors as readers of school-level information, so it doesn’t load pupils’ records for you:

  • The search box at the top of the screen doesn’t find pupils.
  • The command palette (Ctrl+K on Windows, ⌘K on a Mac) lists pages only, under Views. It never lists pupils.
  • Pupil profiles don’t open.
  • Pages that list individual pupils, or that are built from pupil-level records, either show No access in the menu or say that their information is unavailable when you open them.

In the reports shared with you, figures are whole-school figures. Counts, sensitive breakdowns and figures about very small groups are left out, so that individual pupils can’t be identified.

The sidebar shows the same menus as staff see. Items you can’t open are greyed out and marked (some schools choose to hide them instead):

  • No access: your role can’t open this page.
  • Coming soon: the page isn’t available to anyone yet.
  • Disabled: your school has switched this feature off. For example, Safeguarding Audit shows Disabled when safeguarding is switched off in School Settings.

Hover over a greyed-out item to see why. If you think you need a page for your role on the board, ask your school’s Student Radar administrator.

By default, governors can’t raise safeguarding concerns in Student Radar. If you’re worried about a child, follow your school’s safeguarding procedure and speak to the Designated Safeguarding Lead straight away.
