Add a passkey or authenticator app

Written for: School, trust and alternative provision staff.

In Profile & security you can add a passkey, so you can sign in with your device’s fingerprint reader, face recognition or screen lock. You can also add an authenticator app on your phone as a backup way to prove it’s you. Both are optional: you can always sign in with an email code.

If you use Secure Notes, Student Radar also uses these to confirm it’s you before opening them. It also asks for your authenticator code before some security changes.

  1. At the bottom of the sidebar, click your name. Profile & security is written under it. If the sidebar is collapsed, click your initials instead. On a narrower screen, click your initials at the top right of the page.
  2. Choose Profile & security.

The window has three parts: Your profile (your name and email address), Authenticator app and Passkeys.

Add a passkey on the device you want to sign in with, while you’re using Student Radar at app.studentradar.com.

  1. Under Passkeys, the box next to Add passkey says This device. Change it to a name you’ll recognise later, such as Work laptop.
  2. Click Add passkey.
  3. Follow your browser’s or device’s prompt to create the passkey. You’ll confirm with your fingerprint, face or screen lock.

You’ll see “Passkey added”, and the passkey appears in the list with the date you added it. Next time you sign in, click Sign in with a passkey. See Sign in with a passkey.

If you’ve already set up an authenticator app, Student Radar may ask you to confirm it’s you first. Under Verify this session, type the current code from your authenticator app and click Verify and add passkey.

You’ll need an authenticator app on your phone, such as Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator.

  1. Under Authenticator app, you can change the name in the box next to Add authenticator, for example to the name of your phone.
  2. Click Add authenticator. A QR code appears.
  3. Open your authenticator app and scan the QR code. If you can’t scan it, click Can’t scan the code? and type the code shown into your app instead.
  4. In Six-digit code, type the code your app now shows for Student Radar.
  5. Click Verify and finish.

You’ll see “Authenticator app ready”, and the app appears in the list with the date you added it. To stop part-way through, click Cancel.

Click Remove next to the passkey or authenticator app. If you have an authenticator app, Student Radar may ask you to confirm it’s you first: under Verify this session, type the current code from your app and click Verify now, then click Remove again.

Remove a passkey straight away if you lose the device it’s saved on.

  • Passkeys can only be added at app.studentradar.com. At any other address, Add passkey is greyed out and a note explains why. You can still use an email code or an authenticator app there.
  • Your name and email address under Your profile can’t be changed here. Ask your school’s Student Radar administrator if they’re wrong.
