Record phonics check and MTC results
Written for: Primary teachers and assessment leads.
Use Statutory Assessments to record your class’s phonics screening check marks and multiplication tables check (MTC) scores. You see a whole year group in one list, type each pupil’s mark, and each result saves as you go.
Open statutory assessment entry
Section titled “Open statutory assessment entry”- In the sidebar, click Assessment, then Entry, then Statutory Assessments.
- Make sure the Statutory tab is selected.
If your school isn’t set up as a primary school in Student Radar, you’ll see Primary statutory assessment capture first. Click Open primary statutory capture.
Choose the check and the date
Section titled “Choose the check and the date”- Under Assessment, choose Phonics screening check (Y1) or Multiplication tables check (Y4).
- Check the Assessment date.
The date decides which academic year the results count towards. Student Radar starts on a date in the most recent June check window. In the autumn term, for example, it starts on the last day of June just gone, so last summer’s results are saved in last year.
If you choose a date before the June window, a warning explains which academic year the results will count towards. Change the date if that’s not what you meant.
Which pupils are listed
Section titled “Which pupils are listed”The list shows the pupils who would have taken the check on that date, in the year group they’re in now. For last June’s phonics check, that’s today’s Year 2 pupils. The switch beside the date names the year group, for example Year 2 only, and the year group they were in when they took the check. Pupils who have left aren’t listed.
Turn the switch off to see every pupil you can access, for example to record a phonics retake for a pupil in another year group.
Enter the results
Section titled “Enter the results”- Find the pupil and click their box.
- Type the mark:
- Phonics screening check: a mark out of 40, in the Mark /40 column.
- Multiplication tables check: a score out of 25, in the Score /25 column.
- Leave the box, for example by pressing Enter or clicking another box. The result saves as soon as you leave the box.
There’s no save button. The count at the top right shows how many pupils have a result, for example 12 of 30 captured, and the academic year the results count towards.
Beside each saved result, a label shows the outcome:
- Phonics: AS means the expected standard was met (a mark of 32 or more). NS means it wasn’t.
- MTC: Pass means a full score of 25. Fail means a lower score. The statutory MTC has no official pass mark, so this uses 25 out of 25 as the target.
To correct a result, type the right mark over it and leave the box. Emptying the box doesn’t remove a saved result.
Results you record here go into your school’s statutory assessment record, so they appear in assessment reports straight away. Results already imported into Student Radar show in the list too, and you can correct them here.
Key stage teacher assessments
Section titled “Key stage teacher assessments”The same page records key stage 1 and key stage 2 teacher assessment outcomes. Under Assessment, choose the subject, for example KS1 TA — Reading (Y2) or KS2 TA — Writing (Y6). Then click the outcome for each pupil: BLW, WTS, EXS or GDS, or HNM or EXS for science. Each click saves straight away.
- Who can use this page: teachers, SENCos, safeguarding leads, senior leaders, headteachers, office staff and governors can open it by default. Teaching assistants can’t. Whether you can save results depends on your account’s assessment access, and schools can change who has access.
- Pupil profiles: click a pupil’s name to open their profile.
- Standardised tests: NFER, GL and other standardised scores are on the Standardised tests tab. See Enter standardised test scores.
- Schools in Thailand: these checks are optional. The page is called National curriculum checks, the tab is Curriculum checks, and no national comparison is made.
