Compare schools across your trust

Written for: Trust leaders and central teams.

The trust workspace brings the schools in your trust together on one screen. Trust Home gives you headline figures for every school, Risk Radar sets each school’s attendance, SEND, behaviour, health, actions and data quality side by side and flags where a school may need support, and Compare Schools puts chosen schools side by side.

Everything in the trust workspace is a school-level summary. Pupil records stay in each school’s own workspace and aren’t shown at trust level, and small numbers are held back so that individual pupils can’t be identified.

You can open the trust workspace if your trust has made you a member. Your role in a school doesn’t affect this.

  • When you sign in, choose the Trust tab and click your trust.
  • If you’re already in a school, click your school’s name at the top left and choose your trust.

See Switch between your trust and school workspaces for more.

At the top of the screen, the school selector shows All Schools, or the schools you’ve chosen. Your choice applies to every trust page.

  1. Click the school selector.
  2. In Select schools, tick the schools you want. To narrow the list, type in Search schools or tick a phase under Phase. Select visible ticks every school in the list.
  3. Click Apply selection.

To include every school again, open the selector, click All Schools, then click Apply selection. Student Radar keeps your selection until you close the browser tab.

In the sidebar, open Overview, then Trust Home. Trust Home also opens when you first open the trust workspace.

The line under the title shows how many schools and active pupils are included and the academic year. Four cards give the headline figures:

Card What it shows
Active pupils The total number on roll across the schools you’ve chosen. Click View schools to see them.
Attendance coverage How many schools have attendance figures, and the range from the lowest to the highest. There’s no trust average. Click View attendance.
SEND / EHCP Pupils on the SEND register: SEN Support and EHCP together. Click View SEND register.
School leadership actions Open school leadership actions, and how many are overdue. Click View leadership.

Under the cards, Live school overview has a row for each school: roll, attendance, persistent absence (PA), SEND, safeguarding, behaviour incidents, medical needs, actions and when the school’s data was last updated.

  • Click a school’s name to open its school page. See Drill into one school.
  • Click a figure to open that area for that school. This also changes your school selection to that one school.
  • Not available: the school hasn’t supplied this information, for example because its MIS isn’t connected yet. It doesn’t mean zero.
  • Withheld or Suppressed: the number is too small to show without risking identifying pupils. A trust total marked with a plus sign (+) leaves out the schools whose numbers are withheld.
  • Safeguarding figures aren’t released to trust level, so the safeguarding column shows Not available. Ask each school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead for assurance instead.

Behaviour incidents can be recorded in Student Radar before a school’s MIS is fully connected, so check how complete each school’s records are before comparing them.

Spot where schools may need support with Risk Radar

Section titled “Spot where schools may need support with Risk Radar”

In the sidebar, open Overview, then Risk Radar.

School x Domain Risk Matrix has a row for each school and a column for each area. Each cell shows a status:

Status What it means
Critical The figure is well past the point where you’d expect to look closer.
Concern The figure is past the point where you’d expect to look closer.
Watch The figure is close to that point.
Good No signal in this area.
Context Shown for information only. SEND and behaviour figures describe the school; they aren’t treated as a risk signal.
No data There’s no information for this area. It hasn’t been assessed, so don’t read it as low risk.

For example, attendance below 94% shows as Watch, below 92% as Concern and below 90% as Critical. Persistent absence of 15% or more shows as Watch, 20% as Concern and 25% as Critical. The Data column shows how recently the school’s MIS data was updated: it tells you how far to trust the other figures and doesn’t count as a support signal itself.

Safeguarding always shows No data at trust level, because safeguarding figures aren’t released to the trust.

These statuses are prompts to look more closely and talk to the school. They aren’t judgements about the school. Always check the figures behind a status with the school’s leaders before you decide on support.

Use Domain, Severity and Phase above the matrix to show fewer schools or areas, for example Concern+ to see only Concern and Critical. These filters apply to Risk Radar only. Click Clear filters to remove them.

Click a cell in the matrix. The panel below it explains:

  • Reason: what the figure is.
  • What is driving this?: the figures behind the status.
  • Next step: where to look next.

Then you can:

  • Click View school to open the school’s page.
  • Click Open domain view to open that area, such as attendance, for that school.
  • Click Add comparison to add the school to your school selection, ready for Compare Schools. The selection applies to every trust page, so Risk Radar then shows only the schools you’ve chosen. Click Remove comparison to take the school out again.
  • Click Prepare team action to start an action for your trust team about it. It opens Actions with a draft for you to check. Nothing is saved or assigned until you save it there.

Further down, Schools with elevated signals lists the schools with the most serious statuses, and Cross-domain drivers shows patterns that appear across more than one area.

  1. In the sidebar, open Schools, then Compare Schools.
  2. Under School selection, tick the schools you want to compare. With nothing ticked, every school in your selection is compared. Click Compare all schools to clear the ticks.

Each school’s card shows its roll, academic year, Attendance, SEND support (K), EHCP (E), Behaviour incidents and Open safeguarding concerns. Click View attendance and coverage to open that school’s attendance. This also changes your school selection to that one school.

Compare figures from the same academic year, and check how complete each school’s records are before you draw conclusions.

Trust Home (next to Live school overview), Risk Radar and Compare Schools each have Download PDF and Print buttons. See Find and export trust reports.

What you see What to do
“Trust access is not enabled” Your account isn’t a member of a trust. Click Return to your school, and ask your trust’s central team to add you if you need access.
“Trust Home data could not be loaded” Reload the page. If it keeps happening, wait a few minutes and try again.
“No live schools match the current Trust filters.” Open the school selector, click All Schools, then Apply selection.
“No schools match these filters” Click Clear filters to remove the Risk Radar filters.
“No schools are linked to this trust” No schools have been linked to your trust yet. Ask your trust’s central team.
“No Risk Radar aggregates are available” The schools are linked, but no figures came back. Reload the page, and check with the schools that their MIS is connected.
“Overall support is unassessed” No school has an elevated signal in the areas that can be assessed. Safeguarding isn’t assessed at trust level, so this isn’t an all-clear.
“No schools match this comparison. Adjust the school or phase selection.” Open the school selector and choose different schools.
