Create an ISP from an EHCP

Written for: SENCos and inclusion leads.

For a pupil with an EHCP, you can start their Individual Support Plan (ISP) from the EHCP instead of a blank page. Student Radar ticks the needs described in the EHCP, then uses AI to draft an analysis of need and SMART targets in the background. The draft is only a starting point: you check it, link each target to an EHCP outcome and correct or reject anything that isn’t right before it becomes the pupil’s plan.

  • The pupil needs EHCP status, and their EHCP must be uploaded and prepared. Check and save its sections first, because the draft is built from them. See Upload a pupil’s EHCP.
  • If the EHCP hasn’t been uploaded and prepared, Create ISP opens an empty plan for you to write yourself (Edit manual ISP) instead.
  1. In the sidebar, open Inclusion, then SEND, and choose SEND Hub.
  2. On the Caseload tab, choose EHCP from All cohorts to list EHCP pupils.
  3. Click Open story on the pupil’s row.
  4. Under Records needing attention, next to Current ISP, click Create ISP.

The Records needing attention panel in a support story. Current ISP shows Plan missing with a Create ISP button. Provision map shows No linked provision with an Assign provision button.

Create ISP only appears when the pupil has no current ISP.

The Create ISP workspace opens. The areas of need are shown one at a time, with statements already ticked from the EHCP.

  1. Read the ticked statements. Untick any that don’t describe the pupil now, and tick any that are missing. If an area doesn’t apply, click Mark domain as not relevant.
  2. Click Continue to next domain. In the last area, click Analyze.
  3. Assessment Summary shows how many statements you’ve selected. Click Edit Selection to go back, or Prepare draft ISP to carry on.

If Student Radar asks for the pupil’s details first, fill them in and continue.

After you click Prepare draft ISP, you’ll see “Preparing draft ISP” and “You can carry on elsewhere. Your draft will appear in the top bar when it is ready to review.” The workspace closes and you can carry on with other work.

AI drafts the plan from the EHCP sections you checked: the needs in section B shape the analysis of need, and the outcomes and provision in sections E and F inform the targets. While it works, the top bar shows Preparing ISP. When the draft is ready, it shows ISP ready.

  1. In the top bar, click ISP ready, or Review ISP beneath it. Your ISP drafts lists your drafts. As it says, “Keep working elsewhere. Nothing is saved as a plan until you review it.”
  2. Click Review draft. The draft opens over the SEND Register.
  3. Read the Analysis of need, then click Next: Provision & strategies.
  4. Under SMART targets, read each target in full: the target, its success criteria, strategies and review schedule.
  5. For each target, choose the outcome it contributes to in Linked EHCP Section E outcome. Some links are already filled in and marked Suggested: check those too. “EHCP pupils must have each ISP target linked to a Section E outcome before the plan is finalised.”
  6. If the draft isn’t right, click Start again to discard it.
  7. When you’re satisfied, click Complete assessment to create the ISP.

The new ISP becomes the pupil’s current plan. It’s shown under Support promised: plan and target in their SEND Hub support story.

The analysis and targets are written by AI from the EHCP and the pupil’s records. They’re suggestions to support your professional judgement, not decisions. Don’t save a draft you haven’t read in full.

  • England only: EHCPs are an England feature, so this route only applies to schools in England.
  • ISP templates: your school’s ISP template isn’t applied to an ISP drafted from an EHCP. It follows the EHCP’s structure instead.
  • Drafts list: in Your ISP drafts, click Cancel to stop a draft that’s still being prepared, or Dismiss to remove one you no longer need.
