Record the pupil's views in a behaviour support plan

Written for: All staff, SENCos and behaviour leads.

A behaviour support plan works best when it’s built with the pupil, not just about them. You record the pupil’s views twice: their own account of what’s difficult and what helps while you write the plan, and their view of the finished plan before it’s activated. Talk with the pupil in a way that suits them, and record their own words where you can.

Record the pupil’s account while you write the plan

Section titled “Record the pupil’s account while you write the plan”
  1. In the sidebar, click Behaviour, then Intervention, then Support Plans.

  2. Under Current plans, click the pupil’s name to open their draft plan.

  3. In Child and behaviour, fill in Pupil’s account of what is difficult and what helps. Include what they say makes things harder, what helps, and anything they’d like adults to do differently.

Ben Turner’s draft plan, with his account of what is difficult and what helps, next to the family’s observations and priorities.

  4. Click Save draft.

Use the pupil’s account when you fill in the rest of the plan, for example the strengths, the working formulation and the skills you’ll teach. In QABF and evidence, you can also note the pupil’s views under Other pupil data and direct evidence, with the source and date.

When every required section is complete, the plan goes to consultation. Consultation records how the pupil and family feel about the plan, including any disagreement. To open it, click Save and open co-production in Co-production: see Create a behaviour support plan.

Once consultation is open, go through the plan with the pupil, then:

  1. Open the plan and click Co-production.
  2. Under Record a pupil or family contribution, choose the pupil’s view: Supports the plan, Supports with changes or Does not support.
  3. In the box below, record their words, the changes they’ve asked for and anything they disagree with.
  4. Click Record pupil view.

You’ll see “Contribution recorded”. The pupil’s view is added to the list of contributions on the plan.

The SENCo or behaviour lead then records how the pupil’s view was taken into account:

  1. Under the pupil’s contribution, type the reason for your decision.
  2. Click Accepted, Partly accepted or Not accepted.

A reason is needed for Partly accepted and Not accepted. If the pupil asked for changes you’ve agreed, make them in the plan and save the draft before it’s activated.

A pupil who doesn’t support the plan doesn’t stop it going ahead. Consultation isn’t a consent gate for support the pupil needs, and the SENCo or behaviour lead remains accountable for the final plan. Recording the disagreement makes sure it’s seen and considered.

  • Consultation needs a school setting: opening consultation depends on a separate setting for your school. If it’s off, you’ll see “Family co-production is not enabled for this school yet.” You can still record the pupil’s account in Child and behaviour.
  • Who can record views: your school decides who can open consultation, record contributions and decide how they were considered. By default, these are senior leaders, SENCos, DSLs and year leads.
What you see What to do
Record pupil view is greyed out Choose the pupil’s view under Record a pupil or family contribution first.
“Contribution not recorded” Try again. If it keeps happening, the consultation may have closed or your access may have changed.
“Explain how the contribution was considered before recording this outcome.” Type a reason before you click Partly accepted or Not accepted.
“Complete the required plan sections before consultation.” Open Co-production to see what’s still missing in the plan.
“Family co-production is not enabled for this school yet.” Consultation isn’t available for your school. Record the pupil’s account in Child and behaviour instead, and contact Student Radar support.
“You do not have permission to perform this plan action.” Ask the SENCo or behaviour lead to record the view.
