Student Radar

One teaching question at a time

Small Steps Assessment for Special Schools and SEND Pupils

Record what a pupil with SEND can do, one small teaching question at a time: not observed, not met, met with support, met independently or no fair opportunity. Each saved judgement keeps its history, anything not recorded stays unknown, and the teacher decides what the evidence means.

One platform. Everything included.

Share context and move from signal to action without buying separate modules.

£4.25 per pupil/year before volume discounts of 5% to 20%, £250 minimum/year, excluding VAT

  1. 01Five judgements for each teaching question
  2. 02Detail, access and answer cues recorded with the judgement
  3. 03Every saved judgement kept in the question’s history

The strongest fit

Best fit

Special schools and mainstream SEND teams that want to record small-step evidence for pupils working outside age-related expectations, beside the SEND record, with teachers interpreting what each judgement shows.

A clear boundary

Where this is not the right tool

  • 01Establishing attainment on its own: a judgement records what was observed for one question
  • 02A review or sign-off workflow: judgements save immediately, and review means reading the saved history
  • 03Replacing your chosen assessment framework: check each curriculum pack’s sources and coverage before relying on it

Evidence before assertion

Check the small-steps record for yourself

Use a walkthrough to record a judgement for one teaching question, add the detail behind it and read its saved history, with a pupil and pack that match your setting.

Connected school work

Built for the way schools actually work

Schools searching for “small steps assessment software” usually need clarity, prioritisation, and a way to move from insight to action without adding another spreadsheet.

Operational outcomes this workflow is designed to support

  1. 01

Small-step evidence that keeps “not observed” and “no fair opportunity” apart from “not met”

  2. 02

A record of the support and cues behind each judgement

  3. 03

A dated history of each question for the next planning conversation

Product intent only; these are not presented as verified customer outcome claims.

What this is designed for

“Met independently” with answer cues noted is held until the teacher says whether the cues helped

Detail left blank is recorded as unknown, not as a result

A changed judgement is added to the history; saved judgements are not overwritten

How it works in practice

01

Choose the pupil, phase and pack

Choose a pupil with a recorded SEN status, the curriculum phase that fits what they are working on, from EYFS to KS5, and a subject pack. The phase does not have to match the pupil’s year group.

  • Pupils with SEN support, an EHCP or another SEN status
  • Phases from EYFS to KS5
  • Teaching questions, with smaller steps where needed
02

Record what you observed

Click the judgement that fits what you saw. It saves straight away with your name and the time. Add a note, the task, access arrangements, any cues given and the next teaching move; anything left blank stays unknown.

  • Not observed, not met, met with support, met independently, no fair opportunity
  • Answer cues resolved before “met independently”
  • Detail that stays unknown when left blank
03

Read the history before you plan

Each question keeps every saved judgement, newest first, with who recorded it and when. Recorded targets lists the questions assessed for a pupil across packs. The judgements inform the teacher’s view; they do not establish attainment on their own.

  • Saved history for each question
  • Questions recorded across packs
  • Teacher interpretation, not an automatic level

Workflow differences worth reviewing

Use these product capability descriptions as a procurement checklist against the tools and processes you already use.

Compared with a spreadsheet tracker

  • Keeps “not observed” and “no fair opportunity” apart from “not met”
  • Records who made each judgement and when
  • Keeps the cues and access arrangements behind a judgement

Compared with an age-related marksheet

  • Lets you choose the phase that fits the pupil, not their year group
  • Breaks questions into smaller steps where needed
  • Leaves interpretation with the teacher

The practical questions

FAQs

01

What can a teacher record for each teaching question?

One of five judgements: not observed, not met, met with support, met independently or no fair opportunity. A note, the task, access arrangements, any answer cues and the next teaching move can be added; anything left blank is recorded as unknown.

02

Does Small Steps include a review or sign-off step?

No. Judgements save as soon as they are recorded. Reviewing means reading each question’s saved history, which shows every judgement with who recorded it and when.

03

Do the judgements establish a pupil’s attainment?

No. A judgement records what was observed for one question. Use it alongside your other assessment and what you know of the pupil.

04

Which pupils can be assessed, and by whom?

Pupils recorded as having SEN support, an EHCP or another SEN status. Teachers, SENCos, senior leaders and headteachers can record by default; teaching assistants and governors cannot, and schools can change who has access.

05

Where do the curriculum packs come from?

Each pack lists its sources and coverage in the app. Check them against your own curriculum in a walkthrough before relying on a pack.

06

Is the pathway caseload view available?

An earlier caseload view, with pathway attention and staleness flags, is available as a preview. Its features and wording may change.
