Student Radar

Keep the pupil roll yourself

Student Radar for Schools Without an MIS

Most schools’ pupil lists come into Student Radar from their MIS. A setting without one can switch on manual pupil management and keep the roll in School Settings: pupils, contacts, source documents, year groups, classes and leavers.

One platform. Everything included.

Share context and move from signal to action without buying separate modules.

£4.25 per pupil/year before volume discounts of 5% to 20%, £250 minimum/year, excluding VAT

School Settings for a school with an MIS. Manual pupil management is switched on under Setting Profile, and Set up your school then appears as the first tab.
  1. 01Add pupils one at a time, with legal and preferred names, language background, address and up to four contacts
  2. 02Process a stored admissions spreadsheet row by row, creating nothing until each row is reviewed
  3. 03Set up year groups from a starting list, each matched to an England year where one applies

The strongest fit

Best fit

Small schools, independent settings and other providers that do not have an MIS and want the pupil roll in the same place as the support work around it.

A clear boundary

Where this is not the right tool

  • 01Schools with an MIS feed: switching manual mode on does not disconnect it, and the roll should keep coming from the MIS
  • 02Replacing an MIS that a school already uses or is required to keep

Connected school work

Built for the way schools actually work

Schools searching for “school without an MIS” usually need clarity, prioritisation, and a way to move from insight to action without adding another spreadsheet.

Operational outcomes this workflow is designed to support

  1. 01

A pupil roll that class views, registers and pupil records read from

  2. 02

Leavers kept on record, with re-admission and corrections that leave a trail

  3. 03

Source documents stored as confidential files for authorised staff

Product intent only; these are not presented as verified customer outcome claims.

What this is designed for

Manual pupil management is switched on in the Setting Profile, and its tab appears only when it is on

Adding pupils, adding contacts and storing documents each need their own permission

Manual additions stop when a licence pupil cap is reached

How it works in practice

01

Build the roll

With manual pupil management on, Set up your school becomes the first tab in School Settings. Only a first name and surname are required to add a pupil; staff fill in what they know, from legal names and identifiers to year group, language background, home address and up to four family and emergency contacts.

  • Real identifiers only: no invented UPNs or admission dates
  • Adding a contact does not create a parent account or send an invitation
  • SEND, medical, safeguarding and support information added on the pupil record, under its usual permissions
02

Set up year groups and classes

Start year groups from a list (Pre-Nursery to Year 6, Nursery to Year 6, or Year 7 to 13), then rename, reorder and add to them. Registration classes hold each pupil’s main group, and teaching classes are the lesson groups that class views and registers use.

  • Each year group can match an England year, so statutory and early years checks still work
  • Up to 200 pupils moved between year groups at once
  • Year group and class lists show the first 1,000 pupils a member of staff can access
03

Keep documents, admissions and leavers

Admissions spreadsheets and school documents are stored as confidential files, and storing a file adds no pupils. Processing a stored spreadsheet shows each row to match to an existing pupil, create as a new pupil or keep as a draft admission. Pupils who leave stay on record with their leaving date, reason and destination.

  • PDF, Word, Excel, CSV and image files up to 20 MB
  • Re-admit a returning pupil, or undo a leaving recorded by mistake with a note of what was wrong
  • A record created in error is hidden everywhere but kept

In their words

A practitioner view of the platform

“Built from the point of view of school leaders and teachers, not IT departments. It takes what would normally be an hour of spreadsheet work and makes it available in seconds. It reduces workload rather than adding to it.”

The practical questions

FAQs

01

Is Student Radar an MIS?

No. Most schools connect their MIS, and Student Radar reads the pupil list from it. Manual pupil management is for settings that do not have an MIS, so they can keep the roll in Student Radar and use the rest of it.

02

Does switching on manual pupil management disconnect our MIS?

No. It does not disconnect an existing MIS connection. If your school has an MIS feed, the pupil list should keep coming from it.

03

Can we add pupils from a spreadsheet?

Yes, from a stored admissions spreadsheet. Student Radar shows each row so staff can match it to an existing pupil, create a new pupil record or keep an applicant as a draft admission. Nothing is created until each row is reviewed and saved.

04

What happens when a pupil leaves?

Staff record the leaving date, a reason and, if they know it, the destination school. The pupil stays on record under Leavers and can be re-admitted with a return date. A leaving recorded by mistake can be undone, with a note of what was wrong.

05

Who can add pupils and documents?

Adding pupils, adding contacts and storing documents each need their own permission. If a button is greyed out, the message beside it says which permission is missing.
