SEND on a Page: read the school picture and check its evidence

Student Radar helps school staff review a SEND snapshot, check which pupils and records each figure covers and where information is missing, and open permitted pupil cohorts for a closer look.

A snapshot is not a risk assessment or proof of impact. Denominators, source periods, missing data and withheld groups stay part of the picture; staff decide what to investigate next.

The snapshot retains the cohort denominator and does not invent assessment or provision impact.

Whole-school review

See the SEND picture with its evidence limits intact.

Read the school’s recorded SEND cohort, need profile, attendance, reviews and provision evidence, then open the permitted pupil context for the next professional review.

  1. 01

    Check the picture’s basis

Read school scope, freshness, cohort coverage and source warnings before comparing figures.

  2. 02

    Investigate a specific signal

Open a permitted cohort or section and read the underlying pupil/source context rather than interpreting a count alone.

  3. 03

    Make the next authorised decision

Return to the original SEND, attendance, review, provision or strategy workflow for a human-led change.

School context

Keep the headline and denominator together

SEND and whole-school totals describe different cohorts. Missing status, unavailable sources and withheld groups must not become invented zeros.

Need profile

Separate primary need from overlapping needs

Primary need counts each pupil once under the recorded primary area. Any need includes secondary areas and can overlap across rows.

No recorded need area is missing information, not no need.

Attendance basis

Read period, method and eligibility

Attendance summaries retain observation-period limits, eligible pupils and session coverage. A summary without dates is not a like-for-like Attendance comparison.

The example has no supplied observation period; its percentages must keep that limitation.

Permitted cohort

Look behind the specific count

Open the named cohort and read the actual available pupil information. Ordering uses attendance/vulnerability attention signals; risk is not included in the snapshot.

A cohort tile opens authorised pupil context; it does not grant new access.

Impact limits

Keep absent evidence visible

Assessment records and provision judgements have distinct methods and coverage. No available provision projection is not a confirmed absence of support.

No fabricated score change or causal impact appears in this example.

Phone reading

Retain the same source distinctions on a phone

Use section controls, read the complete table and source notes, then open one cohort at a time.

Primary counts and Any need remain different measures in the compact view.

Keep the next decision grounded in the record

A snapshot is not a risk assessment or proof of impact. Denominators, source periods, missing data and withheld groups stay part of the picture; staff decide what to investigate next.

Questions about SEND on a Page

Can staff move from a SEND figure to the pupils behind it?

SEND on a Page includes cohort drill-down where permitted, with routes back to source context and seven sections of school-level information.

What context can staff check behind a SEND snapshot?

The view includes source context, freshness and coverage so staff can see which pupils and records a figure covers and where information is missing before interpreting it.

The value of a connected school

A plan matters when support reaches the child.

Bring the evidence around provision into the review, so the SENCO and teaching team can decide the next step together.

Follow a connection to see what it makes possible

Relevant context, with access set by each staff member’s role and responsibilities. Staff decide the response.

  1. Attendance + SEND

    Check attendance alongside planned support

Look at absence and late arrival around provision. A pupil may have a plan in place and still miss opportunities to receive that support.

  2. Assessment + SEND

Bring progress evidence to the review

Consider recorded learning and small steps alongside targets and provision. Keep the evidence visible while staff judge what is helping and what needs another look.

  3. Family communication + SEND

Include the people who know the pupil

Gather family contributions and coordinate review conversations around the same pupil, with named actions and dates to keep the agreed work moving.

Ask to see a figure traced back to its source context

Use fictional school data to read a SEND denominator, compare attendance provenance, inspect a permitted cohort and recognise unavailable impact evidence.
