SEND Knowledge Base: find a reference and read it in context

Student Radar helps school staff find reference articles by search or category, read the full material and follow source links before returning to the pupil’s authorised plan for a decision.

Reference material is not an individual diagnosis or a current-policy guarantee. Check source, jurisdiction and the pupil’s actual evidence before making an authorised plan change.

The article is reference material, not an assessment of any pupil.

Reference in context

Find the reference. Keep the pupil decision in context.

Search SEND reference articles by topic and category, read the selected article clearly and use target examples as a starting point for professional review.

  1. 01

    Find the intended reference

Use search and category together, then confirm the selected title in the reader.

  2. 02

    Read in context

Read qualifications, source links and jurisdiction limits rather than acting on a result snippet.

  3. 03

    Return to the authorised decision

Adapt an appropriate example in the pupil’s own plan workflow; reading a reference does not save or assign a target.

Selected reference

Read the actual article, not just the search result

The list and reader retain title/category context. A search or category filter and the currently open article are separate selections.

Focused browsing

Narrow the topic without losing context

Choose a category and search within it, then broaden to All categories or clear the query when needed.

The article reader remains identifiable while the list filter changes.

Clear empty states

Recognise a filter result without inferring no support

No matches describes the current search/category combination. It does not establish that no support exists or remove the already-open reference.

Clear the query or choose a broader category to continue.

Supported links

Explain an unsupported article link

An unknown article link identifies the fallback instead of silently claiming the requested content was opened.

A supported article selection clears the unsupported-link state.

Reference boundaries

Keep the provision directory distinct

A directory link receives a specific explanation and an explicit supported Code of Practice overview action.

The article reader does not execute a separate directory application.

Target examples

Use examples with a pupil baseline and agreed plan

The static SMART target table is a reference. Where enabled, a live bank has separate scope, copy permission and published-item controls.

Reading or copying a school-bank item does not automatically put a target in a pupil’s ISP.

Phone reading

Bring the selected article into view

The phone reader sits below the list; selecting an article brings its reading area into view without turning navigation into a professional decision.

Read the full article, qualifications and source context.

Keep the next decision grounded in the record

Reference material is not an individual diagnosis or a current-policy guarantee. Check source, jurisdiction and the pupil’s actual evidence before making an authorised plan change.

Find the intended article without losing category or reader context

Keep examples and reference content separate from pupil decisions

Recognise unsupported links and missing results clearly

Questions about SEND Knowledge Base

Can staff search by topic and category?

The reference reader supports article search and category selection, with routes to full articles and source links.

Does a reference article establish a pupil’s diagnosis?

No. Reference content supports reading and professional consideration. Staff return to the pupil’s authorised record and check the article’s jurisdiction and currency before relying on it.

The value of a connected school

A plan matters when support reaches the child.

Bring the evidence around provision into the review, so the SENCO and teaching team can decide the next step together.

Follow a connection to see what it makes possible

Relevant context, with access set by each staff member’s role and responsibilities. Staff decide the response.

  1. Attendance + SEND

    Check attendance alongside planned support

Look at absence and late arrival around provision. A pupil may have a plan in place and still miss opportunities to receive that support.

  2. Assessment + SEND

Bring progress evidence to the review

Consider recorded learning and small steps alongside targets and provision. Keep the evidence visible while staff judge what is helping and what needs another look.

  3. Family communication + SEND

Include the people who know the pupil

Gather family contributions and coordinate review conversations around the same pupil, with named actions and dates to keep the agreed work moving.

Ask to see a reference found and read in context

Search an article, change its category scope, inspect an unsupported link and read the phone layout before adapting any pupil-plan example.
