SEND / Experts at Hand

Experts at Hand: keep specialist advice and school follow-up together

Student Radar helps school staff record professionals supporting a pupil, their areas of work, source advice and the internal follow-up, while retaining a clear record of involvement and review.

A pupil link and Areas supported do not grant external access or send a referral. Use the service’s referral process and the separate authorised Specialist Access workflow for actual contact and sharing.

The link records school context; it does not contact or invite the specialist.

Specialist coordination

Keep specialist support and the school’s follow-up connected.

Record the named specialist, link the pupil and support coverage, then keep advice and internal follow-up in the right pupil context.

  1. 01

    Record who is involved

Add the named professional and known organisation/contact information without implying an invitation.

  2. 02

    Check the pupil and coverage

Link the intended pupil with a clear reason and review Areas supported separately from actual sharing permissions.

  3. 03

Follow through on the school work

Save the internal next step, track waiting or due items, and close it only when that internal work is complete.

Pupil context

Keep the link and reason together

Expand the specialist to read the linked pupil and school-recorded support context. Counts cover only the current permitted cohort and loaded records.

Named professional

Record the contact before linking pupils

Add a specialist record with the known type, organisation and contact context. A record is not a verified qualification or referral acknowledgement.

No referral or access invitation is sent by Add specialist.

Coverage boundary

Review what the link means

Confirm the specialist, pupil, reason and supported areas. SEND plan coverage describes the role; it does not grant access to that record.

Actual external access is a separate authorised sharing workflow.

Concrete next step

Make the internal follow-up specific

Name what needs checking, set the due date and keep the link context. This is school work, not an appointment booking or message delivery receipt.

The contact or referral must still happen through the required service process.

Confirmed work item

Check the saved follow-up

Review the saved title, due date and specialist-pupil context in the Follow-up workspace before marking it waiting or complete.

Saving the item does not establish that the report or visit has arrived.

Closed state

Keep completion separate from pupil outcomes

Complete closes the internal work item and it appears under Closed. It does not end the specialist link or update the pupil’s ISP automatically.

The actual advice or source change is recorded in its own authorised record.

Phone coordination

Read the same checked context on a phone

Use the view and follow-up filters, then read the complete item and saved state.

Closed is a loaded history view, not the whole set of open work.

Keep the next decision grounded in the record

A pupil link and Areas supported do not grant external access or send a referral. Use the service’s referral process and the separate authorised Specialist Access workflow for actual contact and sharing.

Keep the named specialist and pupil involvement readable

Separate support coverage from real data-sharing permission

Confirm internal follow-up without inventing referral delivery or impact

Questions about Experts at Hand

Can staff link a professional to the pupils they support?

Experts at Hand includes named-professional records, pupil links and involvement coverage, with ways to change or end that involvement.

Does adding the professional make an external referral?

No. Staff make the actual referral or contact through the service’s required process separately. The workspace records involvement, advice and school follow-up.

The value of a connected school

A plan matters when support reaches the child.

Bring the evidence around provision into the review, so the SENCO and teaching team can decide the next step together.

Follow a connection to see what it makes possible

Relevant context, with access set by each staff member’s role and responsibilities. Staff decide the response.

  1. Attendance + SEND

    Check attendance alongside planned support

Look at absence and late arrival around provision. A pupil may have a plan in place and still miss opportunities to receive that support.

  2. Assessment + SEND

Bring progress evidence to the review

Consider recorded learning and small steps alongside targets and provision. Keep the evidence visible while staff judge what is helping and what needs another look.
