SEND / Alternative Provision

Alternative Provision: connect placements, checks and feedback

Student Radar helps school staff bring providers, pupil placements, recorded checks, session feedback and supporting documents together so they can see what has been checked and what needs review.

A checklist percentage is not a safety or suitability certificate. Planned provision, school-recorded sessions and provider-shared updates remain distinct evidence for authorised staff to review.

A saved placement does not send a referral, enrol a pupil elsewhere or prove attendance.

Before the next lesson

Keep the placement, checks and session record connected.

Record the provider and pupil placement, review school-held checks and keep session attendance and feedback beside the supporting evidence.

  1. 01

    Record the agreed arrangement

Choose the intended pupil/provider, purpose, planned pattern and review/reintegration context.

  2. 02

    Review the outstanding checks

Read provider due diligence and placement checks separately, with critical gaps and evidence withdrawal still visible.

  3. 03

    Keep session evidence current

Explicitly log attendance, known minutes and feedback, then inspect the saved entry and any separate provider updates.

Commissioning context

Read the saved pupil placement

The register keeps provider, status, review, available check coverage and recent session context together for the commissioning school.

Provider context

Link the placement to its provider

Create a provider record with the known contact information before adding the pupil placement. Provider checks remain distinct from pupil-placement checks.

A contact record does not establish that due diligence has been completed.

Agreed arrangement

Make purpose and next review explicit

Record the pupil, provider, purpose, status, dates and reintegration plan, then explicitly create the placement and check the result.

Planned days and hours are not a delivered-session record.

Checks with limits

Keep outstanding checks visible

Read criticality, stage and evidence requirements. Status selection saves immediately where authorised; withdrawn evidence requires review.

No completed checks or compliance certification is implied by this example.

Saved session

Keep attendance, minutes and feedback together

Log the actual school-recorded session explicitly and check the saved result. Unknown minutes differ from zero; session feedback is not proof of educational impact.

The school-entered session is separate from a provider-shared update.

Phone follow-up

Read the record where the work happens

Open the placement section and inspect its saved session or check on a phone before deciding what needs follow-up.

The export is bounded to current checks, the last 20 sessions and active document index.

Keep the next decision grounded in the record

A checklist percentage is not a safety or suitability certificate. Planned provision, school-recorded sessions and provider-shared updates remain distinct evidence for authorised staff to review.

Connect provider due diligence and pupil placement context

Record explicit session facts without inferring attendance from a plan

Keep outstanding checks and withdrawn-evidence review visible

Questions about Alternative Provision

Can staff keep provider updates alongside school records?

The placement workspace includes provider information, school-recorded checks, session logging, documents and a separate Provider updates section.

Do recorded compliance checks certify a provider?

The record describes what the school has checked and what still needs review. Staff inspect the underlying evidence rather than treating a completed screen as independent certification.

The value of a connected school

A plan matters when support reaches the child.

Bring the evidence around provision into the review, so the SENCO and teaching team can decide the next step together.

Follow a connection to see what it makes possible

Relevant context, with access set by each staff member’s role and responsibilities. Staff decide the response.

  1. Attendance + SEND

    Check attendance alongside planned support

Look at absence and late arrival around provision. A pupil may have a plan in place and still miss opportunities to receive that support.

  2. Assessment + SEND

Bring progress evidence to the review

Consider recorded learning and small steps alongside targets and provision. Keep the evidence visible while staff judge what is helping and what needs another look.

  3. Family communication + SEND

Include the people who know the pupil

Gather family contributions and coordinate review conversations around the same pupil, with named actions and dates to keep the agreed work moving.
