Alternative Provision / AP Progress Drivers

AP progress reviews, baselines and observed change

Student Radar helps alternative provision staff record dated reviews against a published progress framework and inspect baseline coverage and observed change. Staff retain the observation window and support context; a level is not a diagnosis or evidence that support caused the change.

Observed change while supported does not show what caused the change. Missing baselines and incompatible frameworks remain gaps; staff retain the judgement and decision.

The fictional overview reports three baseline measures of six expected and change across two comparable measures. Fictional school example.

AP Progress Drivers

From an observation to a dated review and careful comparison

Record dated reviews against a published progress framework, then inspect baseline coverage, comparable measures and the observation window before interpreting change.

  1. 01

Start with coverage and the observation window

Check baseline measures, missingness and the comparable-measure denominator before reading the pupil or cohort change.

  2. 02

Record levels supported by what staff observed

Choose the pupil and actual review date, review every measure and its definitions, then save the complete review with factual evidence.

  3. 03

    Keep revisions and comparisons explicit

Reopen the saved date, make reasoned corrections to the actual record and publish framework changes with their comparison decision and rationale.

Compare the measures

Compare recorded values without filling the gaps

The fictional comparison keeps baseline/latest levels and missing measures visible. An absent comparable review is not a recorded zero change, and cohort averages do not use every expected measure.

Find the missing evidence

Find the evidence that still needs recording

Missing baseline and No observations are coverage filters. They identify a recording gap for human review rather than assigning pupils a risk category or support decision.

Record a dated review

Tie the level to a date and a factual account

The fictional review selects Engagement and Independence levels for the chosen date and records what staff observed. Earlier values can inform the starting point, while an unobserved measure is never silently given a default score.

Check the saved judgement

Return to the judgement that was saved

The reopened fictional review retains its Engagement level and checklist-task evidence. Date-specific reading and revision checks keep a correction distinct from a new review or an uncertain duplicate.

Define the framework

Publish definitions with an explicit comparison decision

The framework editor defines observable areas, level meanings, semantic version and effective date. A changed framework keeps old reviews tied to their recorded definitions, with comparison only where the published relationship supports it.

A clearer record of observed progress

Observed change while supported does not show what caused the change. Missing baselines and incompatible frameworks remain gaps; staff retain the judgement and decision.

Questions about AP Progress Drivers

Can we record dated reviews against our published framework?

Yes. Authorised staff record reviews using the provision’s published framework, with recording and configuration permissions checked separately.

Can we inspect baseline coverage before interpreting progress?

Yes. Progress Drivers shows baseline coverage, comparable measures and the observation window. Observed change while supported does not establish causation.

The value of a connected school

A placement touches more than the timetable.

Provider staff use the same safeguarding and health tools as mainstream schools, and commissioning schools on Student Radar have their own side of the placement.

Follow a connection to see what it makes possible

Relevant context, with access set by each staff member’s role and responsibilities. Staff decide the response.

  1. Safeguarding + Alternative Provision

Raise a concern from the pupil you are working with

Provider staff can raise a concern, and authorised DSLs work it on the DSL Action Board, with the chronology and record transfer in the same place. Attendance, review and timetable views shared about a named learner leave out protected record types. Staff see summaries and only the records they are separately authorised to open, and a link does not give wider access.

  2. Health + Alternative Provision

Check medical needs before an off-site session

Authorised staff can check medical needs, medications and healthcare plans for the young people in the provision before a session, and record first aid when something happens.

  3. Commissioning school + Alternative Provision

See the placement from the commissioning school’s side

Schools that commission placements keep a provider register with due-diligence checks, placement checks before, during and after the placement, and an evidence pack they can export.
