Alternative Provision / AP Placements

AP placements, agreed sessions and named school sharing

Student Radar helps alternative provision teams record commissioning schools, placement dates, support hours, agreed sessions and review ownership. The Manage menu separates attendance, responsibility, sharing and finish decisions; support hours are not attendance, and ending one commission does not leave the whole provision.

Support hours are not actual attendance, an arrangement is not a registration certificate, and finishing one commission is not leaving the whole provision. Staff make and review the consequential decisions with their own authority.

The fictional placements list separates Ada’s six agreed support hours from Alan’s unrecorded hours and future start. Fictional school example.

AP Placements

From agreed support to a reviewed placement lifecycle

Record the commissioning school, support hours and agreed pattern, then manage distinct attendance, lifecycle and sharing decisions for the intended placement.

  1. 01

Record the intended commission and support pattern

Check the pupil and school identity, confirmed registration arrangement, agreed support hours/sessions, key worker and review date, preserving anything not yet known.

  2. 02

Use the separate attendance and review decisions

Pause with dates and an owned review, correct an incorrectly recorded plan explicitly and record who is responsible for statutory attendance without rewriting the original observations.

  3. 03

    Share and finish deliberately

Review the named recipient, permitted windows and exact publication, then use the appropriate placement-finish or whole-provision lifecycle decision rather than treating either as an ordinary detail edit.

Record the agreed terms

Keep support hours and registration separate

The fictional placement records its school, six support hours and two agreed sessions alongside the registration arrangement. These fields describe the agreement; they do not establish actual attendance or the provision’s legal registration status.

Verify the saved detail

The reopened fictional reason retains the practical-programme update and planned review with Sam Patel. Saving a reason does not pause attendance, confirm responsibility or alter a school’s access.

Give the pause a review owner

A pause needs dates, a decision and a review owner

The native fictional form asks for pause dates, review date, named review owner and the evidence checked. Confirm pause and owned review is separate from opening the form, and earlier observations/absence remain intact.

Record the statutory arrangement

Record the agreed statutory responsibility

The fictional arrangement remains Agreement not yet confirmed. Choosing the commissioning school records responsibility without writing into that school’s register; provision presence and earlier source arrangements remain distinct.

Review named sharing

Review the exact named sharing boundary

The fictional workspace has no configured relationship and consent is not recorded. Attendance, published-review and timetable windows are selected separately for a named recipient; staff also check publication wording for sensitive information.

Finish the intended commission

End one placement with a final eligible day

The native fictional finish form makes the final day and decision explicit. It is closed without confirming; a real placement finish affects later plans/access for this commission while other placements and the learner’s on-roll status remain separate.

Questions about AP Placements

Can a placement retain its agreed sessions and next review?

Yes. Record the commissioning school, dates, support hours, agreed pattern, key worker and next review against the intended placement.

Can we share a specific timetable or review with a named school?

Yes, through the authorised named-sharing and publication controls. Inspect the exact version and recipient; a context link or placement record does not grant general access.

The value of a connected school

A placement touches more than the timetable.

Provider staff use the same safeguarding and health tools as mainstream schools, and commissioning schools on Student Radar have their own side of the placement.

Follow a connection to see what it makes possible

Relevant context, with access set by each staff member’s role and responsibilities. Staff decide the response.

  1. Safeguarding + Alternative Provision

Raise a concern from the pupil you are working with

Provider staff can raise a concern, and authorised DSLs work it on the DSL Action Board, with the chronology and record transfer in the same place. Attendance, review and timetable views shared about a named learner leave out protected record types. Staff see summaries and only the records they are separately authorised to open, and a link does not give wider access.

  2. Health + Alternative Provision

Check medical needs before an off-site session

Authorised staff can check medical needs, medications and healthcare plans for the young people in the provision before a session, and record first aid when something happens.

  3. Commissioning school + Alternative Provision

See the placement from the commissioning school’s side

Schools that commission placements keep a provider register with due-diligence checks, placement checks before, during and after the placement, and an evidence pack they can export.
