Alternative Provision / AP Daily Check-ins
AP daily check-ins with observed session measures
Student Radar helps alternative provision staff record a pupil’s observed response in a booked session, including support and context. Review patterns with their framework and comparison limits; missing observations stay unknown and ratings do not establish diagnosis, cause or impact.
Staff choose the observation and interpretation. A rating is not a diagnosis, attendance mark or proof of impact; changing a framework does not rewrite earlier evidence.
From observed booking to contextual review
Record the observation with the measures that gave it meaning.
Capture a pupil’s actual booked-session response, keep missing observations unrecorded and review ratings with their source framework, support conditions and comparison limits.
01
Choose the actual session
Check school date, permitted pupil, booking and published measure meanings.
02
Record only what was observed
Complete the observed measures with relevant support context, leaving other bookings unknown.
03
Review and correct with provenance
Check the saved record, its original framework and comparable recent evidence before interpreting a pattern.
Missing observation is not a low score
Missing observation is not a low score
Booked-session and on-roll views retain the real denominator. A failed framework/evidence read stays unavailable rather than becoming suggested scores or a zero.
Read recorded coverage before the average
Read recorded coverage before the average
The summary states booked observations, applicable cohort/check-in counts and source comparison limits. Needing attention is a prompt to inspect evidence, not a pupil judgement.

Open the pupil and actual session, then read each published measure and rating description. A saved correction retains the record’s own framework.
Make the observed selection explicit
Make the observed selection explicit
Observed all measures enables a convenience fill only for selected unrecorded sessions. Staff inspect the proposed labels and note the help supplied before saving.
Verify the recorded result
Verify the recorded result
Save the counted complete observations, then reopen the actual booking and check its note. Partial failures retain unfinished/unconfirmed drafts.
Correct a judgement without inventing a second occasion
Correct a judgement without inventing a second occasion
Amend the saved rating or note against its original revision/framework, then check the source again. A revised score is not automatically measured learning progress.
Define what staff should observe
Define what staff should observe
Permitted managers set two-to-six criteria and two-to-five scale points. Existing work is saved/discarded deliberately before publication.
State the comparison decision
State the comparison decision
Version, effective date and rationale make a framework change explicit. Comparable is used only where meaning and scale interpretation are materially unchanged.
Keep the session and rating labels readable
Keep the session and rating labels readable
The phone retains the named pupil, actual booking and individual measure choices before a save. Unknown observations remain unscored.
Make the next decision from the evidence
Staff choose the observation and interpretation. A rating is not a diagnosis, attendance mark or proof of impact; changing a framework does not rewrite earlier evidence.
A confirmed correction that preserves the source measurement framework
A recent-picture view that retains missingness and comparability limits
Questions about AP Daily Check-ins
Can a check-in include the support given during a session?
Yes. Record the observed measure with support and context for the pupil’s actual booked session.
Can staff review check-in patterns over time?
Yes. Review the source framework, observation window and comparison limits. An unrecorded session is unknown rather than a low score.

The value of a connected school
A placement touches more than the timetable.
Provider staff use the same safeguarding and health tools as mainstream schools, and commissioning schools on Student Radar have their own side of the placement.

Raise a concern from the pupil you are working with
Provider staff can raise a concern, and authorised DSLs work it on the DSL Action Board, with the chronology and record transfer in the same place. Attendance, review and timetable views shared about a named learner leave out protected record types. Staff see summaries and only the records they are separately authorised to open, and a link does not give wider access.

Check medical needs before an off-site session
Authorised staff can check medical needs, medications and healthcare plans for the young people in the provision before a session, and record first aid when something happens.

See the placement from the commissioning school’s side
Schools that commission placements keep a provider register with due-diligence checks, placement checks before, during and after the placement, and an evidence pack they can export.

Ask to see one observation saved without scoring everybody
Record one fictional observed booking, leave another unrecorded, correct the original judgement and explain how a framework publication affects future comparison rather than rewriting the past.
