Alternative Provision / AP Careers & Destinations

AP careers guidance and leaver destination checks

Student Radar helps alternative provision teams record guidance interviews, encounters, work experience and agreed action plans, then check leaver destinations later. Checks retain sources, dates and follow-up; an unchecked destination differs from a checked Not known result and does not prove sustained success.

Destination at closure, a later recorded check and an unchecked result are different facts. Staff retain the judgement and contact process; recorded guidance or task completion does not establish a sustained destination.

The fictional overview separates current guidance coverage from leaver destinations and unchecked follow-up. Fictional school example.

AP Careers & Destinations

From a careers conversation to a sourced destination check

Record careers interviews, encounters, work experience and agreed plans, then review leaver checks with their source, dates and outstanding follow-up.

  1. 01

Record the actual guidance or encounter

Select the young person’s placement, choose the type and actual dates, then record the outcome or agreed actions in its specific fields.

  2. 02

    Distinguish closure from later evidence

Review the destination when the placement ended, then inspect the scheduled interval, due date and actual later check instead of assuming the closure destination continued.

  3. 03

Keep follow-up owned and its missingness visible

Configure future intervals, grace and lead, add missing checks deliberately and read reached, recorded, unchecked and not-yet-due counts with their period and scope.

Record the conversation

Give the conversation its own factual record

The fictional interview names Ada’s placement and adviser, date and agreed exploration of practical courses. Saving the conversation does not apply to a course, send a referral or confirm enrolment.

Verify the placement record

Return to the outcome that was saved

The reopened fictional guidance record retains the interview outcome and recorder. Reasoned withdrawal remains a deliberate way to correct an unsuitable record without silently rewriting its history.

Review what is still unchecked

Keep missed and missing checks separate from destinations

The fictional leaver has a missed three-month check and later intervals not yet scheduled. College at closure is not presented as a verified current destination; Add these checks is a separate action.

Record the source

Record how the destination is known

The native check form asks where the leaver is now, the information source and Date checked. A recorded Not known result is different from an unchecked point, and the form does not contact anyone.

Set future follow-up

Apply future arrangements without rewriting scheduled dates

Intervals, grace days and follow-up lead define new closure follow-up. Existing checks keep their dates; an older leaver’s missing interval is added explicitly rather than assumed to appear retrospectively.

Retain careers activity on its placement record

Questions about AP Careers & Destinations

Can we retain interviews and work experience with a placement?

Yes. Careers & Destinations connects guidance interviews, encounters, work experience and agreed action plans with the young person’s placement.

Can we record later destination checks and outstanding follow-up?

Yes. Record what each later check established with its source and date, then review missing intervals and owned follow-up separately from the destination recorded at closure.

The value of a connected school

A placement touches more than the timetable.

Provider staff use the same safeguarding and health tools as mainstream schools, and commissioning schools on Student Radar have their own side of the placement.

Follow a connection to see what it makes possible

Relevant context, with access set by each staff member’s role and responsibilities. Staff decide the response.

  1. Safeguarding + Alternative Provision

Raise a concern from the pupil you are working with

Provider staff can raise a concern, and authorised DSLs work it on the DSL Action Board, with the chronology and record transfer in the same place. Attendance, review and timetable views shared about a named learner leave out protected record types. Staff see summaries and only the records they are separately authorised to open, and a link does not give wider access.

  2. Health + Alternative Provision

Check medical needs before an off-site session

Authorised staff can check medical needs, medications and healthcare plans for the young people in the provision before a session, and record first aid when something happens.

  3. Commissioning school + Alternative Provision

See the placement from the commissioning school’s side

Schools that commission placements keep a provider register with due-diligence checks, placement checks before, during and after the placement, and an evidence pack they can export.
