Provision planning: shape the week’s EYFS learning areas

Student Radar helps EYFS teams organise a week’s learning areas, themes, focus children, enhancements and next steps, starting from observations and an agreed review.

Intended provision needs a later observation and review; planning counts do not establish pupil impact.

Teaching and learning

Plan EYFS continuous provision with a clear purpose.

Bring the week, focus children, learning areas, enhancements and next observations together in a shared plan.

  1. 01

Start with the week and scope

Choose a Monday-based week and all-EYFS or class scope before reading or changing the plan.

  2. 02

    Make the opportunity practical

Create areas, link learning goals and add focus children, enhancements and next-step text based on real observations.

  3. 03

    Save and review deliberately

Confirm the saved plan, handle a colleague’s newer version and agree who will review what actually happened.

Provision in practice

Plan from an observation

A child retells a story using picture prompts. Staff plan the next opportunity to retell independently, keeping the intended provision distinct from the evidence they will gather.

  • Link the area to learning goals and a practical focus
  • Describe the enhancement and resources
  • Keep typed names distinct from verified pupil references

Provision in practice

Keep a shared weekly draft clear

The plan belongs to a week and scope. Unsaved state, saved confirmation and conflict controls help colleagues review changes before replacing one another’s work.

  • Create custom areas or adapt the starter scaffold
  • Retain week/scope drafts while the planner stays open
  • Reset or deliberately replace a newer shared version

Provision in practice

Agree what to observe next

Next steps make the planned observation explicit. Staff still agree who will deliver and review the opportunity; counting plan items does not demonstrate delivery or impact.

  • Add and remove specific next-step text
  • Review focus children and enhancements in context
  • Return actual observations to the assessment record

A practical plan that can be reviewed

Keep the intended opportunity, its delivery and the later observation distinct.

Prepare the week’s opportunities

Area, theme, goals and enhancement detail make the intended provision usable by colleagues.

Avoid losing a colleague’s shared plan

Saved state and conflict handling support deliberate review before replacing a version.

Plan an observable next question

A specific next step directs the later observation without inventing an outcome.

Questions about Provision planning

What can an EYFS team include in a weekly plan?

The plan includes learning areas, themes, focus children, enhancements and next steps, with a weekly plan that staff save and confirm.

Does a saved provision plan show that an activity happened?

No. A plan guides practice. Staff review delivery afterwards; the saved plan is not evidence that an activity happened or improved an outcome.

  3. Behaviour + Teach

Keep classroom feedback with the support plan

Recorded observations and report cards help staff review behaviour support over time, then agree classroom responses with the colleagues supporting the pupil.
