Key people: organise EYFS responsibility and observation focus

Student Radar helps EYFS teams check each child’s key person, arrange appropriate backup and plan focus children for a week’s observations.

Agree staffing changes and review suggestions before accepting them. An assignment is not an adult room sign-in; an accepted focus is not an observation completed.

Fictional example. Check the selected school, scope and saved result.

Your next step

Make responsibility clear. Plan the next observation.

Review current key-person and back-up assignments, distinguish the children needing attention and explicitly plan focus children for the selected week.

  1. 01

    Check the responsibility

Choose the school/class and distinguish a key person who left from a child with no assignment. Read permitted back-up and absence context.

  2. 02

    Record an agreed change

An individual dropdown choice saves immediately; bulk assignment uses the explicit Assign control. Check the resulting roster.

  3. 03

    Plan an observation focus

Review recorded observation gaps and the selected week, then accept, skip or add a focus child. Record the observation separately.

In practice

Check the saved responsibility

Individual key-person and back-up choices save immediately. Review the refreshed child row after making an agreed change.

Fictional saved assignment. Assigning an adult is separate from room sign-in or care delivered.

In practice

Review the key-person groups

See the children grouped under their current key person and read the available back-up context before arranging staffing.

Fictional groups. Staff absence is shown only where the viewer may read it.

In practice

Accept the intended focus

Check the week, observation window and suggested reason, then make the explicit Accept decision. An observation is recorded separately.

An accepted focus is a plan for attention, not a completed observation.

In practice

Check an individual assignment on a phone

Open the child card to review the Key person and Back-up editing controls.

Fictional child. Confirm the identity and agreed adult before changing a selection.

Clear records

Keep staffing and observation records distinct

Groups, back-ups, read-only access and focus suggestions serve different purposes. No available absence marker does not prove an adult is present.

  • Current responsibility and eligible back-ups
  • Separate unassigned and departed-key-person attention
  • Human-reviewed focus planning with its observation window

Keep responsibility and observation planning clear

Check roster changes and accepted focus against staffing decisions and actual recorded observations.

Distinguish no assignment from a key person who left

Review current groups and eligible back-ups

Plan the selected week with an explicit human decision
