Alternative Provision / Check-ins and Progress Drivers
Daily check-ins record how each session went against the measures your leaders choose. Progress Drivers record a level in each progress area, with the first review kept as the baseline, so change is described from the young person’s own starting point.
Scores and levels describe what staff observed. A change in level is not proof of what caused it, and the page says so.
Session to review
Small, regular records build the picture a review needs.
01
Rate each booked session on two to six measures. The defaults are engagement, work completion, following requests and respect towards others.
02
A young person is flagged as needing attention when their last five check-ins average towards the bottom of the scale, alongside a 14-day average for the group.
03
Record a level in each progress area at review. Change is shown from the baseline, for example L4 +2.
Every capability has a purpose
Each capability solves a distinct problem for pupils and staff. Explore the part your team needs and the work it supports.

Progress Drivers
The default areas are confidence and self-belief, emotional wellbeing, life skills, education and learning pathways, positive relationships and mentoring, purpose and motivation, inclusion and belonging, and leadership and voice. Levels run from Emerging to Independent.
Evidence
A check-in can link a structured observation or a controlled document version, or record that evidence is missing. Files are kept with their versions in the Evidence Store.
Regular records and a clear baseline give the review something solid to discuss.
Leaders choose the check-in measures, the progress areas and the scales.
Progress is shown against each young person’s own baseline, not a group average.
Observations and documents sit with the check-in, and missing evidence is recorded rather than ignored.

The value of a connected school
Provider staff use the same safeguarding and health tools as mainstream schools, and commissioning schools on Student Radar have their own side of the placement.

Safeguarding + Alternative Provision
Provider staff can raise a concern and authorised DSLs work it on the DSL Action Board, with the chronology and record transfer in the same place. Safeguarding records are never shared through commissioner access.

Authorised staff can check medical needs, medications and healthcare plans for the young people in the provision before a session, and record first aid when something happens.
